Lesson 8

Place the yellow corners

Learn to move the yellow corner pieces to the corners where their colours belong.

Goal: move the four yellow corners to their right places. A corner in its place sits between the centres of its three colours; it may still be twisted in this stage.

Recognise the case

Look at the three colours of each top corner and compare them with the three centres around it. If the colours are the same, in any order, the corner is in its place. Is at least one corner in place, or none?

  • One corner in place

At least one corner sits between its own three centres (it may be twisted). Rotate the whole cube so this corner is at the top front right. Do place corners (U R U' L' U R' U' L) once or twice, until all four corners are in place.

  • No corner in place

No top corner sits between its own three centres. Do place corners (U R U' L' U R' U' L) from any side; one corner settles into its place.

What to do

If a corner is in place, rotate the whole cube to hold it at the top front right and do place corners (U R U' L' U R' U' L): this corner stays put and the other three swap places. Do it once or twice, until all are in place.

Place corners

Place the yellow corners

U R U' L' U R' U' L

When: When the yellow corners are not in the right places. Hold a corner that is right at the top front right; if none is, use any angle.

Finger tip: It is two halves: U R U' L' and U R' U' L. The cube looks scrambled in the middle; wait for the end.
