Lesson 2
The daisy
The first stage: place the four white edge pieces around the yellow centre to make the daisy.
Goal: four white edges around the yellow centre. All four have their white sticker facing up, so the yellow centre looks like the heart of a flower with white petals. We call it the daisy. The corners do not matter in this stage.
Recognise the case
Find a white edge that is not in the daisy yet and look where it is: in the bottom layer, in the middle layer, or in the top layer with its white sticker facing sideways? Each place has its own case.
On top, white sideways
The white edge is in the top layer, but its white sticker faces sideways. Bring the edge to the top front. Do F: the edge goes down to the middle layer at the front right. Free the top right slot and do R.
At the bottom, white down
The white edge is in the bottom layer and its white sticker faces down. Bring the edge to the bottom front. Free the top front slot and do F2.
At the bottom, white sideways
The white edge is in the bottom layer and its white sticker faces the front. Bring the edge to the bottom front. Free the top front slot and do F: the edge comes up to the middle layer at the front left. Free the top left slot and do L'.
In the middle, white in front
The white edge is in the middle layer. Bring the edge to the front right. If its white sticker faces the front, free the top right slot and do R.
In the middle, white on the right
The white edge is in the middle layer. Bring the edge to the front right. If its white sticker faces right, free the top front slot and do F'.
What to do
First rotate the whole cube to bring the edge to the front, then bring it up with the case’s move. The edge settles next to the yellow centre with its white sticker facing up. Repeat until all four petals are there.
Free a slot: If a petal is already where the edge will come up, turn the top layer first; the petal moves aside and the slot is free. This way adding a new petal never takes an old one down.
