Lesson 6

The yellow cross

Learn and practise the algorithm that makes the yellow cross on the top face.

Goal: a yellow cross on the top face. All four top edges have yellow facing up; the corners do not matter in this stage.

Recognise the case

Look at the yellow stickers of the four top edges, not the corners. There are three cases: a dot if none has yellow facing up, an L shape if two neighbouring edges do, a line if two opposite edges do.

  • Dot

No top edge has yellow facing up. Do the yellow cross algorithm (F R U R' U' F'); an L shape appears.

  • L shape

Two neighbouring edges have yellow facing up. Turn the top layer so these two edges are at the back and on the left. Do the yellow cross algorithm (F R U R' U' F'); a yellow line appears.

  • Line

Two opposite edges have yellow facing up. Turn the top layer so the line runs from left to right. Do the yellow cross algorithm (F R U R' U' F'); the yellow cross is complete.

What to do

You always do the same yellow cross algorithm (F R U R' U' F'); what changes is how you turn the top layer first. A dot becomes an L shape, an L shape becomes a line, and a line becomes the cross.

When: When the top has no yellow cross. Hold a line horizontal, an L shape at the back and left, a dot at any angle. Repeat until the cross is there.

Finger tip: It has three parts: F, the right-hand move (R U R' U'), F'. You already know the right-hand move.
